MINOX BN 7x50 DC Nautic Binoculars in White

One of the newest lines to the range of MINOX Optics are their Nautic marine binoculars that have been designed and developed to meet the extreme conditions encountered at sea.

It is no secret that MINOX are one of my favorite optical brands - this is because the engineering quality and values that I and like most other people have come to expect from German optical companies is not lost on MINOX. They really do produce some excellent quality binoculars and just like all of their other lines, Minox Nautik binoculars are manufactured with exacting mechanical precision to the highest quality, with quality components and all without compromise.

I have reviewed many binoculars in the Minox range and so whilst I may not be the world's best sailor or ever get to sail around the globe (unfortunately), I can confidently say that in my experience, as with almost any other Minox binocular, with a Nautic marine binocular you are investing in a quality optical instrument that is not only good looking but practical as well as durable and should easily be able to handle most of what you can throw at it.

The Minox Nautic line currently includes two models:

Minox BN 7x50 DC Nautic Binoculars

Minox BN 7x50 DC Nautic BinocularsAvailable in both with and black, the Minox BN 7x50 DC Nautik binocular features a digital compass that is fully integrated within it's body.

The 7x magnification is ideal for use on an unsteady platform (like a boat) and is the most used magnification on marine binoculars. This is to ensure that the view through them is as steady as possible, it also helps to ensure that you get a nice wide field of view. 123m at 1000 m (7,1°) / 369ft @ 1000 yds.

The outer design is in part the work of the Volkswagen Design team and not only do they look great but the tough rubber armoring provides an extremely good grip even when wet. To ensure that there is no fogging and for 100% waterproofing (down to 3m), the BN 7x50 DC has been filled with nitrogen making these binoculars excellently suited for all conditions at sea. (They have an operating temperature range of -20° to +50° C)

One thing to mention is that Minox Nautic Binoculars do not float, so you may consider getting yourself a good pair of Floating Binocular Straps to ensure that if they were to go overboard in deep water that you could recover them.

Quality optical components have also been used and all optical elements are fully coated. So as well as a stunning view through them, with the heads up display and with just the press of a button, all the important information like the digital compass display with it's automatic tilt compensation, barometric pressure reading, or the digital stopwatch is shown to the user in the center of the view.

The eagle eyed amongst you may notice that there is no focusing wheel on these porro prism binoculars, this is a common feature of many marine binoculars and is done for speed and ease of use as these binoculars have a fixed focus and are therefore always in focus from 20 meters to infinity. These are often misleadingly referred to as auto focus or self focusing binoculars but whatever the name what it means is once you have correctly calibrated the optics for your eyesight using the diopter adjustment you never have to adjust the focus, saving you time and making them much easier to use especially if you have thick gloves on as is often the case on vessels in cold climates.

Digital compass display in the centre of the field of view
The Minox Nautic BN 7x50 DC gives you, with the press of a button, a digital compass display right in the middle of the field of view. These Nautik binoculars are also equipped with a highly sensitive gravity sensor that allows for automatic tilt compensation. The compass functions at the highest level of precision.
Compass display with a digital graticule
Depending on you preferences, you can decide if you want the compass display at "Centre Mark" in the middle of the field of view or displayed as a digital graticule.
Digital barometer with recording function
Another real highlight of this BN 7x50 DC is that it includes a digital barometer function. This includes the reading of the current air pressure as well as the air pressure over the previous 16 hours. In this way weather changes can be detected in good time.
More Features
Added features not found on other marine binoculars include a digital stopwatch with split time. Then there is the digital tilt function which allows the height of the observed object to be determined based on the inclination angle reading in the display. Additionally, the Minox BN 7x50 DC binocular comes with an altimeter as well as a thermometer.

Minox BN 7x50 C Nautic Binoculars

Minox BN 7x50 C Nautic BinocularsSimpler than the digital compass version above (DC), the Minox BN 7x50 C, is still a high quality pair of optics, but comes with an analogue compass instead so what you get is the quality and some of the functionality but with an excellent price-performance ratio. Just like the digital version these Nautic binoculars are both robust and reliable.

The Minox BN 7x50 C comes equipped with a precisely functioning analogue compass and graticule, that guarantees an unerring navigation at sea as well as in port.

These marine binoculars as you would expect are both fog and waterproof down to a depth of 3 meters. The body also has an extremely good non-slip and robust rubber armoring that not only protects them from day to day knocks and bumps, but also excellently protects the optics against salt water and sun radiation.

Other Minox Binoculars

The entire range of MINOX binoculars is based around the highest quality optics and they have the ideal optics not only for marine use, but for serious bird watchers, nature observation, and hunting binoculars. All MINOX binoculars feature a multi layer coating on all air to glass surfaces. This reduces any reflection and makes the image sharper and even more brilliant. The prisms in the MINOX binoculars are coated with a phase correction layer which enhances the contrast, even in difficult light conditions, therefore increasing the twilight factor of these new variable power binoculars.
