First Look: New GPO Passion SD Binoculars at SHOT Show 2025

Introduction

At the 2025 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, I had the opportunity to visit the German Precision Optics (GPO) stand, where I met with Surujh Roopnarine, the Senior Director of Sales at GPO. During our conversation, he introduced me to GPO’s new line of PASSION SD binoculars.

GPO is well known for producing high-quality binoculars with premium optical performance, often competing with top-tier European brands while maintaining a more accessible price point. However, many customers and retailers have requested a more affordable option, but one that still manages to maintain GPO’s reputation for quality (both optical and build) while at the same time offering a more budget-friendly, entry-level price point. The PASSION SD series is their answer to this demand:

The GPO PASSION SD Series: An Overview

The PASSION SD series is designed to provide good optical performance and durability at a more budget-friendly price point compared to GPO’s premium offerings. This range currently includes six models with different configurations, that should cater to the needs of the most popular outdoor and nature observation needs:

  • PASSION SD 8x26
  • PASSION SD 10x26
  • PASSION SD 8x34
  • PASSION SD 10x34
  • PASSION SD 8x42
  • PASSION SD 10x42

The Passion SD series is positioned below the well-regarded PASSION ED and HD lineups (see all my reviews of GPO binoculars here) and aims to provide a solid entry point for those new to quality binoculars or looking for a reliable secondary pair for casual use.

Key Features and Build Quality

Optical Performance

The PASSION SD binoculars feature GPO’s SD optical system:

  • Good light transmission: While not at the same level as the PASSION ED models (in terms of optical coatings – especially on the prisms), the SD series should still provide a more than decent image – Indeed from my brief time with them on the stand I was impressed – however do keep in mind that this is difficult in a large hall with bright lights and was not a full test – only my first impressions.
  • Natural color rendition: Good quality glass and coatings meant that from my initial view, I thought they delivered an accurate, yet pretty vibrant color reproduction.
  • Image Quality & Sharpness: While the SD series does not incorporate extra-low dispersion (ED) glass in their lenses, from my initial look through a selection of the models, I thought the level of color fringing was more than acceptable and their images were nice and sharp from the center of view to the edges, with only minor vignetting right at the periphery, which at this price range is more than acceptable.
  • Good FOV & close focusing: Most models have a more than competitive field of view within their configuration bracket and all models also have close focus distances of between 2-3 meters, which is great.

Build and Ergonomics

  • Rubber-Armoured Magnesium Housing: Unlike many other binoculars at this price level that use polycarbonate or plastic housings, the PASSION SD models feature a magnesium chassis. This not only looks and feels more premium, but ensures greater durability while keeping the weight relatively low.
  • Compact, Ergonomic Design: I was on the whole impressed by how comfortable, well-balanced and compact each of the models was within their main size brackets (Standard, Mid and Compact).
  • Tripod Adaptable: All GPO Passion SD binoculars also feature a magnesium bridge with a tripod thread adapter
  • Waterproof & Fogproof: The SD series is nitrogen-purged and sealed to prevent internal fogging, allowing use in various weather conditions.

Technical Specifications Table

Below is a detailed breakdown of the key specifications for each PASSION SD model:

PASSION SD vs. PASSION ED: Key Differences

Unlike the Passion ED series, the Passion SD binoculars do not feature Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass, and whilst the Passion ED uses the highest quality Dielectric Coatings on their prisms, I do believe the SD uses either Silver or Aluminium coatings. This obviously leads to a slightly less perfect optical performance, but at this price range, this is perfectly understandable.

Additionally, the SD models utilize plastic eyecups instead of aluminum. Another distinguishing factor is that the SD series is only available in a single black color option. These simplified design choices allow GPO to offer the Passion SD line at a more budget-friendly price. So whilst they do not achieve the same optical precision as the ED series, the SD binoculars should still deliver good to excellent value for money (more testing required) while retaining GPO’s signature sleek and sophisticated design.

Price Comparison

The PASSION SD series is significantly more affordable than the PASSION ED models. Here’s a breakdown of the approximate retail prices:

  • PASSION SD 8x26 & 10x26: €299.00
  • PASSION SD 8x34 & 10x34: €399.00
  • PASSION SD 8x42 & 10x42: €499.00

In comparison, the PASSION ED models typically range from €439 to €599, depending on the configuration.

Who Are the PASSION SD Binoculars For?

The GPO PASSION SD binoculars are well-suited for:

  • Casual Birdwatchers: Those who want a decent pair of binoculars without investing in premium optics.
  • Travelers & Hikers: The compact models (8x26 and 10x26) are lightweight and easy to carry.
  • Wildlife Observers/Hunters & Outdoor Enthusiasts: The 8x42 and 10x42 models offer a balance of magnification and light-gathering ability.
  • Entry-Level Users: Individuals who are new to binoculars and want a reliable starting point without overspending.

Final Thoughts

I feel the introduction of the PASSION SD series marks an interesting move for GPO, as they respond to market demand for more affordable binoculars whilst at the same time trying to maintain their reputation for quality. While these models may not match the high-end performance of the PASSION HD and ED series, they look more expensive than they are, feel great in the hands and I believe still offer a good, and competitive optical performance within their price range.

So for those seeking a more entry-to-mid-level binocular which still maintains many premium design elements, the PASSION SD series is definitely a strong contender. However, users who prioritize top-tier optical performance should still opt for either the PASSION ED or HD ranges.

Caviet: I want to stress that these are just my initial thoughts and as always I believe in thoroughly testing the binoculars in real-world conditions before I make a final judgment. But based on my initial impressions, if you are interested in a good (very good) set of binoculars but at a more affordable option, the GPO PASSION SD series is worth considering.
