Kite APC Image Stabilized Binoculars: Which is Best 14x50 or 18x50?

Question: Hello, I have been looking into the Kite APC Binos in the 14x50 to 18x50 range. I am having a hard time deciding, and have come across your review of the 14x50 Kite APC binoculars, but wanted to know your thoughts on how it compares to the 18x version, and which you prefer. My use case will be anything from birds, to being on a boat in the ocean, and or general use.

Answer:

Hi – I actually have the 18x50 version with me atm, and the short answer is, I don’t have a preference between them, it depends on the situation. So I would select the one that suits my needs more:

  • 14x50 – better in low light, wider field of view, slightly easier to use
  • 18x50 – More image detail, longer reach, so better at longer distances

So in your case, the marine use is interesting – if you are on a big boat on a smooth lake and looking far off across it, then maybe the 18x, but if as you say, you are often on choppy water/smaller boat in the ocean etc, then I would personally go for the 14x option – for everyday use and birding (in gardens/forests etc), I would say the slightly lower 14x magnification and resultant wider Field of View and better low light performance makes them little more versatile as well.

If you could only choose the one pair, what would it be?

It Depends!

I am fortunate in that I have loads of other binoculars, so I chose the 18x50 version as I don’t have any others in that configuration.

However, this could still be relevant to you: So, for example, if you already have a good 8x or 10x, then perhaps I would suggest you go for the 18x as it will complement them well, in that the higher magnification will give you different options.

However, if this is going to be your only set, I would go for the 14x50 as it is just a little less niche and thus a better all-rounder.
