MAGVIEW Digiscoping B1 System for Binoculars – Setup & Installation

Before I got down to using and testing the Magview Digiscoping B1 adapter system for binoculars, I had to install it onto my phone and the binoculars I planned to use it with. While it is very easy, it is a different concept from most other digiscoping/digibinning adapters I have used in the past, so I carefully followed the instructions for the first time:

Here is my detailed step-by-step guide for setting up and installing the B1 MAGVIEW Digiscoping System onto binoculars, with a few tips that I have to make the process even easier and to get the best results possible right from the get-go:

What’s In the Box:

The MAGVIEW B1 package includes the Adapter Ring, phone plate, an Allen wrench, and a sizing strip (to for onto smaller eyepieces if needed).

  • MAGVIEW S1 or B1/B1 XL Adapter (S1 for spotting scopes, B1 & B1 XL for binoculars)
  • MAGVIEW Phone Plate
  • Alen Key

You Will Also Need:

  • Your Smartphone
  • Spotting Scope or Binoculars
  • Lens Cleaning Cloth (optional but recommended)

Installing MAGVIEW on Binoculars (B1 Adapter)

Prepare Your Binoculars

  • If you have twist-up/down eyecups, for maximum stability fully twist in the eyecup (which you are installing the adapter onto – usually the left) to the minimum eye-relief setting.
  • If you have rubber fold-up/down eyecups, fold down the one on the left eye-piece

    Attach the B1 Adapter

    • Remove the sizing strip from inside the B1 adapter and set it aside.
    • Then, loosen the small Allen screw located on the outer rim of the B1. This will allow the ring to expand slightly for easier fitting.
    • Slide the B1 Adapter over the binocular’s eyepiece.
    • Ensure it is centered and sits flush against the eyepiece.
    • Take care when tightening the Allen bolt on the B1 adapter. It is engineered to attach securely without applying excessive force that could damage the binocular eyepiece.
    • If after tightening the bolt, it is still too loose (your binocular eyepiece has a diameter smaller than the minimum size of the adapter – 41mm for the B1), you’ll need to install the sizing strip. To do this, remove the adapter, peel off the adhesive backing on the sizing strip, and carefully attach the strip to the inside of the B1 ring. Be sure to leave the gap near the Allen screw uncovered. Then repeat the previous step.

Attach the Phone Plate to Your Smartphone

    • Peel and stick the MAGVIEW Phone Plate to the rear of your phone.
    • The correct location to attach the plate will depend on where exactly your phone’s camera lens is.
    • What I did was to line up the camera lens on my phone with the opposite ocular lens to which the adapter was installed. I then noted where the adapter was in contact with the underside of my phone and fixed the plate in this area. The plate is large enough so that you do not have to be too precise.

Connect Your Phone to the Binoculars

    • Turn on the camera on your phone and bring it up towards the binocular eyepiece that it will use. As you get close, the very strong magnetic force will then pull the phone plate onto the B1 adapter located on the opposite eyepiece.
    • You will then probably need to slightly adjust the position of your phone to center the image.
    • With a little practice, I found that I got better at lining it all up until I often only needed a very minor, adjustment before I was ready to start capturing images or video.
    1. Focus & Align
      • Open your phone’s camera.
      • Adjust the binocular’s focus wheel until you get a sharp image.
      • If vignetting occurs, reposition the phone slightly and zoom in a little.
    2. Start Capturing
      • Once properly aligned, take photos or videos of your subject!

    Additional Tips for Best Results:

    • Use manual focus on your phone if the autofocus struggles.
    • If you’re experiencing issues with your phone, try downloading the MAGVIEW app – it’s free on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. This app provides useful tools to streamline your setup and enhance performance: Many modern smartphones have multiple camera lenses, and when using the default camera app, zooming in can sometimes cause the phone to automatically switch lenses. The MAGVIEW app prevents this, ensuring a smoother and more consistent experience. another one of the app’s key features is its grid system, designed to help you perfectly align your phone with your optics. The center dot in the grid marks the exact center of your camera, which you’ll use as a reference point for alignment.
    • A helpful tip when lining up your camera with the ocular is to “chase the light.” When you open the camera app and activate the grid, look through your optic until you see light coming through. Align the center dot with the bright circular opening, then slowly move your phone closer until the magnetic attachment locks it into place. Once connected, you should have a properly aligned and stable image.
    • Shoot in good lighting conditions and ideally, your binoculars will be of good quality and have large objective lenses
    • Clean your binocular or spotting scope’s eyepiece lenses before attaching MAGVIEW.
    • Avoid excessive movement while recording to prevent shake – the best way to do this is to attach your binoculars onto a tripod using a tripod adapter.

    Cost & Where to Buy

The Magview B1 Binocular Adapter currently retails for around $100, the S1 Scope adapter is $170 and a set of three MagView Phone Plates costs $15. Note the MagView Wireless Charging Phone Plate is $15:
