At the 2025 SHOT Show, the guys at German Precision Optics (GPO) introduced me to their latest addition to the PASSION lineup: the GPO Passion APO 20-60x85mm Spotting Scope. Scheduled for release in May 2025, this new scope is designed to deliver a premium level of optical performance and excellent durability for demanding outdoor applications.

Optical Highlights

The standout feature of the Passion APO is its use of apochromatic (APO) lenses, which are engineered to minimize chromatic aberrations. This ensures clear and color-accurate images, even at high magnifications (like the 60x maximum setting with the included eyepiece).

Additionally, they have also added their GPObright™ high-transmission coatings to improve light efficiency, enabling users to achieve bright and detailed views in sub-optimal lighting conditions.

The included (but removable) eyepiece has a 20x-60x magnification range, meaning right out of the box, this scope is versatile enough for a wide range of activities, from wildlife observation to long-distance spotting.

Its field of view (FOV) at 1000 yards varies from 108 feet at 20x to 60 feet at 60x, offering ample viewing area for scanning or focusing on specific details.

Build and Design

The GPO Passion APO 20-60x85 is currently only available with an angled body which is constructed with an internal magnesium body, wrapped in a durable rubber armor for added protection. This combination ensures the scope can withstand challenging environments while remaining relatively lightweight for its size at 63 ounces.

With an 85mm objective lens and a length of 16.9 inches, the scope strikes a balance between performance and portability, making it suitable for both stationary and mobile use.

The scope features a precision-engineered brass gear helical focus system, designed for smooth and accurate focusing. This mechanism allows users to make fine adjustments with ease, which is particularly beneficial when viewing at higher magnifications.
