Leica Trinovid 10x25 Binoculars Review

These 10x25 Leica compact binoculars are as small as they are powerful: Weighing only 250 grams which is less than 9 ounces, with a powerful 10x magnification and a black rubberized armor over a rugged metal housing they are ideal compact binoculars that you can take with you wherever you go no matter the terrain.

Obviously the main reason to get these Leica 10x25 Trinovid binoculars or any other compact binocular is for their small size. The clever double hinge design on these allows you to collapse these already compact binoculars into an even smaller package that will fit into almost any pocket to carry with you anywhere.

I have always liked compact binoculars and have always owned a pair, they are especially useful in situations like walking safaris when you want to carry binoculars as well as your camera or rifle (for protection if you are the safari guide). You can tuck the binoculars away in your pocket giving you both hands free when using your camera and because they come with a good 10x magnification these would be ideal for all nature and wildlife observation.

Light Transmission

To ensure that these binoculars are as compact as possible, Leica have used 25mm diameter objective lenses. This combined with the powerful 10x magnification means that they only have an exit pupil of 2.5mm, this means that they are ideally suited for use in good light conditions. Having said that the high quality of the optics that have patented HDC multi-layer lens coatings on the 6 lens elements in each barrel used by Leica, all with their excellent light transmission qualities ensures the maximum amount of light that enters the binocular gets to your eye. Obviously there is no comparison in terms of light transmission between these and say a pair of 10x42 binoculars, but I still found them to give an excellent quality bright image and can be used even at dawn or dusk.

Focusing is quick and smooth on these roof prism binoculars using central focusing knob on the top of the binoculars. The 14.6 mm of eye relief is adequate and the eyepieces come with adjustable eyecups meaning that eyeglass wearers can push the cups down to achieve a better field of view.

The Leica Trinovid 10x25 BCA binoculars are not waterproof, they are described by Leica as "waterspray resistant", which I guess means that they will be fine in light rain, so long as you don't leave them out in the rain!

Conclusion

Excellent quality compact binoculars, that are small, light and tough enough for you to take pretty much anywhere and should last you a lifetime. Are they worth the rather hefty price tag? Like all Leica binoculars, they have not skimped on the quality components, the build quality is excellent and they have used the finest grade optics, so they are bound to be expensive. My advice is if you can afford them and you plan on using them often enough, then they are definitely worth it. If however you you have to take out a second mortgage to get them, why not go for something like the Steiner 10.5x28 Wildlife Pro Binoculars.
