Nikon Fieldscopes & Spotting Scopes

The Nikon Fieldscope Range

Nikon optics offer a broad selection of excellent quality Fieldscopes, Spotting Scopes and interchangeable eyepieces. A rugged waterproof construction means that these can handle most situations out in the field. May models within their range have won awards for optical performance or innovative technology.

Nikon EDG 85-A FieldscopeNikon EDG Fieldscopes

Nikon's flagship spotting scopes and their newest line are their very impressive Nikon EDG Fieldscopes. They come in both angled and straight through designs and in two sizes: 85mm and the more compact 65mm objective lens sizes.

The EDG fieldscopes come with premium quality optics and utilise Nikon’s ED glass (extra-low dispersion glass) to reduce the amount of chromatic aberration. These scopes are renowned for producing an extremely bright and high contrast images. This technology is also used in their high end binoculars.

EDG fieldscopes all have roof prisms that have phase correction coatings on the prism glass that keeps light in correct color phases. These coatings are only needed on roof prism spotting scopes to enhance resolution, contrast, and color fidelity.

The quality does not end with the optics as for me their outer construction and look are just as impressive. What is more, they are filled with nitrogen gas and have been sealed with O-rings meaning that the EDG Fieldscope is both waterproof and fog proof. An important point to note is that the body-and eyepiece joint is only water-resistant.

Digiscoping with Nikon EDG Fieldscopes
As well as observation, EDG Fieldscopes have been designed right from the initial concept for digiscoping and as you would expect with a camera manufacturer like Nikon, connecting them to a digital camera is really simple with either a SLR camera attachment (FSA-L2) or bracket (FSB-U1) that connects to your eyepiece for standard compact digital cameras that will allow you to take spectacular telephoto photographs. Note: some Nikon Coolpix cameras don't need the bracket.

A little More About Nikon's Technology:

Nikon ED Glass
Nikon’s exclusive ED glass was developed to push the limits of optical performance by eliminating chromatic aberration, or the dispersion that occurs when light rays of varying wavelengths pass through optical glass. Nikon ED glass produces brilliant, high resolution images that are extremely bright, razor sharp and free of flare for unparalleled viewing.

Nikon dielectric coated prisms
These produce sharper and brighter views with multiple layers of anti-reflective compounds on the glass surface that make for bright and vivid sight pictures.
