Canon are the world leaders and indeed pioneers in image stabilisation binoculars and this set of Canon 12x36 II IS Image stabilization binoculars has to be for me is one of the best pairs of binoculars in their range. Considering the impressive magnification of 12x and the large objective lens, these binoculars are surprisingly light. Although I would not put them in the category of compact binoculars, these mid size binoculars are also pretty small, again considering the power.
Canon 12x36 mark II IS - how do they differ from the original 12X36?
The new mark II binoculars differ from the first version of the Canon 12x36 IS binoculars in that the new design is much smaller and lighter making them easier to hold. The older original Canon 12x36 IS binoculars were much more bulky making them hard to use one handed. A few small changes have also been made to the optical coatings making the Canon 12x36 mark II IS quite a bit brighter due to the higher light transmission with the new coating.
Canon's Image Stabilization (IS) technology
Until you have tried it, you will not fully appreciate how well Canon's Image Stabilization (IS) technology works. According to Canons states, within two thousandths of a second of being shaken off the optical axis by vibrations, the Image Stabilisation mechanism swings into action to correct the incoming light path by precisely the right amount, which effectively eliminates any hand shake giving you a steady image. The Canon 12x36 II IS uses batteries and they are said to last for up to 4 hours of continuous use. The large Image Stabilization button is on the top, centre part of the binoculars is easily accessible, making the feature easy to use, weather you are right or left handed. It is also important to point out that you can use the Canon 12x36 II IS Image stabilization binoculars and indeed any of Canons other IS binoculars just like normal binoculars without the stabilizer enabled.
Main Features of the Canon 12x36 II IS Image stabilization binoculars:
Canon 12x36 II IS: Wide field of view
The 60º apparent field of view on the Canon 12x36 II IS is pretty good and Canon's own Doublet Field Flattener lenses deliver beautiful, flat, distortion free images. The Long eye relief of over 14mm allows you to see the full field of view even if you wear sunglasses or prescription glasses.
Quality Optics
Canon's Super Spectra lens coatings deliver vivid, high contrast images with accurate colour balance as well as eliminating unwanted internal reflections that cause 'flare' and image 'wash out'.
Not Waterproof
Whilst the Canon 12x36 II IS binoculars are not waterproof, they will be fine to use in light rainy conditions.

The Canon image stabilizer Bino's are excellent, they have a solid build feel with the coating of hard rubber, and excellent viewing. The purchase of which level to go for obviously depends on each individuals use for them. The reason I selected this version is because it's a compromise of weight, magnification and price. I feel the 12 x mag fits in the middle nicely. Field of view is 87m at 1000 and weight 660g ideal for a multitude of uses (I enjoy back packing in the Scottish mountains) and these are excellent if you are out of breath or have an unsteady hand, the stabilizer really does the trick. I would like the 15 x or 18 x but the weight and cost may defeat the purpose. No objective lens caps was a disappointment for the price.

My wife purchased the Canon 8x25 IS glasses as a gift. I knew anything under 10x would not work well for me so I returned them and ordered the Canon 12x35 IS. I could not be happier with a pair of binoculars unless it was the Canon 18x50 IS. The image stabilization works so well that the stronger powers would not be a problem when holding by hand. The construction of these glasses is excellent and the optics are very clean. They come with a nice soft case that is really functional. Like other reviewers have mentioned it would be nice if the front lenses came with covers. This isn't something I would concern myself over If you like looking at great detail that's not jittering all over the place you will love these glasses.

Three trips to Africa and we have been the envy of everyone else with these glasses. Don't do a big trip without these.
